Unsupported Child's Benefit for Multiple Children: How Payments Stack

Each Child Gets Their Own Benefit

Unsupported Child's Benefit is a per-child payment. If you are caring for two, three, or more children, you receive a separate UCB (or Orphan's Benefit) for each child. The payments stack — one does not reduce the other.

Each child's rate is based on their own age bracket (as at 1 April 2026):

  • Under 5: $301.53 per week
  • 5 to 9: $303.62 per week
  • 10 to 13: $327.16 per week
  • 14 and over: $350.58 per week

A grandparent caring for two siblings aged 7 and 12 receives $303.62 plus $327.16 per week in base rates alone — $630.78 per week before any supplementary allowances.

Separate Applications, But You Can Do Them Together

You need to submit a separate application for each child, but you can lodge them at the same time during your Work and Income appointment. The evidence requirements for caregiver identity and residency are the same across all applications, so you prepare one set of certified ID documents and bank details. What changes per child is:

  • The child's birth certificate
  • The evidence of family breakdown specific to that child (the circumstances may be identical for siblings, but Work and Income assesses each child individually)
  • Any income the specific child receives

If all the children entered your care at the same time for the same reason — for example, three siblings removed from a parent struggling with addiction — the family breakdown evidence overlaps heavily and the case manager can process them together. The 20-working-day clock applies to each application independently from your date of first contact for that child.

Supplementary Allowances Also Stack

Each supplementary allowance is per-child:

  • Establishment Grant: $350 one-off per child (so $1,050 for three children)
  • Clothing Allowance: per-child weekly rate based on each child's age
  • Holiday and Birthday Allowances: per-child, twice yearly, at 50% of each child's base rate
  • School and Year Start-up Payment: per-child annual payment (you must apply for each child separately via MyMSD between January and February)
  • Extraordinary Care Fund: up to $2,000 per child per financial year — if two children each have qualifying needs, you can apply for $2,000 for each

Disability Stacking

If one or more of the children has a disability, the Child Disability Allowance ($62.43 per week at April 2026) is also per-child and fully compatible with UCB. It is not income-tested. A caregiver with two children on UCB, one of whom has a qualifying disability, receives UCB for both plus CDA for the child with the disability.

The Disability Allowance (the separate income-tested allowance covering disability-related costs like specialist fees and transport) is assessed at the household level rather than per-child, so having multiple children does not automatically double this payment.

The Combined Annual Picture

For a household with two children on UCB — one aged 7 and one aged 12 — the combined annual income from base rates, clothing, birthday and holiday allowances, and start-up payments easily exceeds $35,000 before any ECF grants, housing supplements, or disability allowances. UCB or OB is paid in addition to NZ Superannuation or your personal benefit. However, the child is not counted as a dependent child when calculating the caregiver's main benefit rate, Accommodation Supplement rate, or Temporary Additional Support threshold.

The Unsupported Child's Benefit and Orphan's Benefit guide includes a multi-child stacking calculator that helps you see exactly what you are entitled to across all children, with the application steps for each allowance laid out in one place.
