Quebec Family Allowance Grandparent: How to Transfer Allocation Famille
You're raising your grandchild full-time, covering meals, school supplies, clothing, and medical appointments — but the Family Allowance cheque is still going to a parent who isn't in the picture. Transferring the Allocation famille to yourself is straightforward once you know what Retraite Québec requires.
What the Family Allowance Pays in 2026
The Allocation famille is a provincial tax-free benefit administered by Retraite Québec. For the 2026 benefit year:
- Maximum: $3,068 per child per year ($255.66 per month)
- Guaranteed minimum: $1,221 per child per year ($101.75 per month) — every eligible caregiver gets at least this, regardless of income
Reductions begin when adjusted family net income exceeds $57,822 for two-parent households or $42,136 for single caregivers. Even high-income households never drop below the guaranteed minimum.
Payments arrive quarterly (January, April, July, October) or monthly if you request electronic delivery through Retraite Québec.
How to Transfer the Benefit
To redirect the Family Allowance to yourself, file a Change of Caregiver notice (Changement de responsable de l'enfant) with Retraite Québec. You can do this:
- Online through Mon dossier at Retraite Québec
- By paper form mailed to Retraite Québec
You'll need to submit a certified copy of the tutorship judgment or, if you don't have a formal order yet, proof of primary daily care — school registration forms showing your address, medical records listing you as the responsible adult, or a signed letter from the school principal.
A formal tutorship judgment (suppletive or dative) is the strongest proof and avoids delays. Informal proof works but may trigger additional verification.
Backdating Is Available
Retraite Québec can backdate benefits for up to 11 months before the date they receive your application. If you've been caring for the child for a year before applying, you can recover most of that period's payments. Don't wait — every month you delay past 11 months is a month permanently lost.

Additional Provincial Supplements
On top of the base allowance, Retraite Québec pays three targeted supplements:
School supplies supplement: $127 per child for the 2026–2027 school year, paid automatically in August for children aged 4 to 16 as of September 30. No income test.
Handicapped child supplement (SEH): $241 per month ($2,892 per year) for children with significant physical disabilities or mental health conditions lasting at least one year. No income test.
Exceptional care supplement (SEHNSE): For children with severe, complex medical needs — $1,215 per month (Tier 1) or $808 per month (Tier 2). No income test.
The SEH and SEHNSE require medical certification. The school supplies supplement is automatic for all children receiving the base allowance.
If Retraite Québec Refuses
If Retraite Québec denies your benefit transfer or you disagree with the amount, you have two levels of appeal:
- Administrative review (Demande de réexamen) — file within 90 days of the decision
- Administrative Tribunal of Québec (TAQ) — file within 60 days of the review decision
Don't Forget the Federal Benefit
The Quebec Family Allowance is separate from the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), which is federal. You can — and should — receive both simultaneously. The CCB requires filing Form RC66 with the CRA. Provincial and federal benefits don't reduce each other.
For a complete walkthrough of transferring both provincial and federal benefits after a tutorship judgment, with checklists and bilingual form instructions, the Quebec Tutorship and Family Allowance Guide covers every step.
