Idaho TANF vs TAFI — What Is the Difference?
They Are the Same Program
TANF — Temporary Assistance for Needy Families — is the federal block grant that funds cash assistance programs in every state. Idaho simply calls its version TAFI: Temporary Assistance for Families in Idaho. Different name, same federal funding source, same general purpose.
When you see a national resource mention TANF and wonder whether Idaho has it, the answer is yes — it is TAFI.
Why the Name Causes Confusion
National kinship care organizations, federal government websites, and even legal aid guides refer to TANF. Idaho's own Department of Health and Welfare uses TAFI exclusively. Grandparents researching benefits online end up bouncing between the two terms, unsure whether they are reading about the right program.
They are. If a resource says "TANF child-only grant" and you are in Idaho, that is the TAFI child-only grant.
What Matters: The Child-Only Track
Roughly 96% of Idaho's TAFI caseload consists of child-only cases — situations where a relative caregiver is raising a child and only the child's income counts toward eligibility. The caregiver's Social Security, pension, or wages are completely excluded.
The maximum grant is $309 per month per household. There is no 24-month lifetime limit on child-only cases, and the caregiver is not required to participate in work programs.

The One Practical Difference in Terminology
When filling out the idalink application or talking to an IDHW caseworker, use the word TAFI. If you ask for "TANF" they will know what you mean, but the forms, notices, and program materials all say TAFI.
If you are looking for a single resource that covers TAFI alongside SNAP, Medicaid, child care, and every other Idaho program available to relative caregivers, the Idaho Kinship Financial Help Guide uses Idaho-specific terminology throughout.
