Using Missouri myDSS as a Relative Caregiver: Application Help

The myDSS portal at mydss.mo.gov is Missouri's single digital front door for three of the biggest benefit programs available to kinship caregivers: Temporary Assistance (TA), SNAP (food stamps), and MO HealthNet. One application, one portal, one login — but the interface was not designed with grandparents raising grandchildren in mind, and certain sections need specific attention to get the household composition right.

Creating Your Account

Go to mydss.mo.gov and create an account using your own information — name, email, date of birth, and Social Security number. You are the applicant, applying on behalf of the child.

If you already have a myDSS account from a previous application (your own SNAP benefits, for example), use the same login. Adding a child to your case does not require a new account.

Filling Out the Application

The unified application covers TA, SNAP, and MO HealthNet. You can select which programs to apply for, or apply for all three at once — applying for all three is almost always the right call, since each program has different income rules and the child may qualify for coverage you did not expect.

Household Composition

This is where most errors happen. The application asks about everyone in the household. For a child-only TA grant:

  • List yourself as the caretaker-relative (the payee, not the applicant)
  • List the child as the applicant
  • Mark yourself as a non-needy household member

FSD uses this to determine that your income should be excluded from the TA calculation. If you accidentally list yourself as an applicant, FSD may evaluate your income against adult TA rules — which have work requirements, time limits, and income tests you do not need to pass.

For SNAP, the household unit generally includes people who live together and purchase and prepare food together; a child who lives with you and shares meals must be included. The same application handles both programs, but the rules diverge behind the scenes.

Income Reporting

Report your income accurately on the application. For TA, FSD will exclude it in the child-only calculation. For SNAP, they need it to determine your benefit amount and to calculate deductions (medical, shelter, standard).

Report the child's income separately: any child support payments, Social Security survivor benefits, or trust distributions the child receives.

After You Submit

The application generates a confirmation number — save it. FSD has 45 calendar days to process TA and MO HealthNet applications, and 30 days for SNAP (7 days for expedited SNAP if you qualify).

The TA Orientation

After you submit, FSD schedules a mandatory TA Orientation. This is a one-time session — phone call or in-person — covering program rules. Your application sits in pending status until the orientation is completed and a "BC" code is entered in the system.

If you have not heard about the orientation, call the FSD Call Center at 1-855-373-4636 and ask about the status. A missed or unrecorded orientation can stall an application.

Document Uploads

myDSS lets you upload supporting documents directly: photos of birth certificates, pay stubs, utility bills. Upload everything as early as possible — documents that arrive late are the second most common reason for processing delays.

Checking Your Case Status

After the application is submitted, log back into myDSS to check:

  • Whether your case is pending, approved, or denied
  • Whether FSD has requested additional documents
  • Your EBT balance and payment dates once benefits are active

When myDSS Is Not Enough

Some situations are better handled in person or by phone:

  • Complex household arrangements (multiple children from different parents, a parent who sometimes lives in the home) benefit from an in-person interview at a local FSD Resource Center
  • Missing documents or verification issues are resolved faster face-to-face
  • EBT card replacement requires a call to the FSD Call Center or a visit to a local office

The FSD Call Center (1-855-373-4636) can conduct application interviews by phone, answer status questions, and request paper application packets mailed to your home.

The Missouri Kinship Financial Help Guide covers the myDSS application alongside every other program, with household composition tips, document checklists, and a tracking worksheet for application dates and caseworker contacts.
