Manitoba Daycare Subsidy Application
What the Subsidy Covers
Manitoba's Child Care Subsidy Program helps eligible families with the cost of licensed child care for children from 12 weeks to 12 years. Effective September 13, 2026, the family contribution and non-subsidized daily fee were eliminated for all families eligible under the program.
The subsidy applies to children aged 12 weeks to 12 years enrolled in licensed child care. It doesn't apply to unlicensed babysitters, informal arrangements, or after-school programs that aren't part of a licensed facility.
For kinship caregivers, this matters because a grandparent who's taken in a young grandchild may need child care to work, attend medical appointments, or manage the other demands that come with suddenly parenting again.
Who Qualifies
Eligibility is based on the reason care is needed and a calculation that considers:
- Annual household income and allowable family deductions
- Family composition, including the number and ages of children and any additional support needs
- The cost of licensed child care
A kinship caregiver should confirm with the Child Care Subsidy Program what supporting documents it requires for the care arrangement.
The assessment uses household income and family deductions. Use the program's Subsidy Eligibility Estimator to check your household's eligibility.
The Waitlist Reality
The subsidy itself is accessible — the bottleneck is finding a licensed space. Manitoba's child care waitlists, particularly in Winnipeg, can stretch months. Rural and northern communities have fewer licensed providers overall.
Start the subsidy application and the child care search simultaneously. Don't wait until you've found a space to apply for the subsidy, and don't wait until the subsidy is approved to start looking for a spot.
Some strategies that help:
- Register on the Manitoba child care registry (if available in your area) as early as possible
- Consider licensed home-based providers — they often have shorter waitlists than large centres

How to Apply
For questions about a subsidy application, contact the Child Care Subsidy Program:
- Winnipeg: 204-945-8195
- Toll-free: 1-877-587-6224
The application requires household financial documents and the name of the licensed child care facility. You can apply before the child is enrolled, but the application cannot be processed until you provide the facility name. A kinship caregiver should ask the program which documents it needs for their specific care arrangement.
It may take 6 to 8 weeks to review and assess an application. Submit the required financial documents and facility name promptly to avoid delay.
Subsidy and Other Benefits
The subsidy has its own eligibility and application rules. Confirm how those rules apply alongside any other benefits you receive.
The Manitoba Kinship Financial Help Guide includes child care subsidies in its benefit-by-benefit walkthrough, including how to time the application alongside other benefit claims.
