What to Bring to Your ISD Interview in New Mexico
After you submit a complete benefits application through YES New Mexico, the Income Support Division must conduct an interview, typically by phone, within 10 days. Ask ISD whether an in-person interview is available. Missing the interview or showing up without the right documents can delay a decision and may require you to refile, starting a new 30-day processing period.
Documents for a Child-Only Cash Grant
If you are applying as a non-needy caretaker relative (child-only TANF), gather documents for the child and your own ID, but not your income records. Here is what to gather:
Child identity and citizenship:
- Birth certificate
- Social Security card (or the number — ISD can verify electronically)
- School enrollment record showing the child's name and date of birth
Your identity:
- Government-issued photo ID
Proof the child lives with you:
- A Caregiver's Authorization Affidavit (NMSA 40-10B-15) with your address
- School records listing your address as the child's home
- A letter from a doctor, clinic, or school confirming the child resides at your home
- Utility bill or lease showing your address (to confirm the household location)
Proof of your relationship to the child:
- Birth certificates that trace the kinship connection (your birth certificate, the child's parent's birth certificate, the child's birth certificate)
- A court order if you have one, though it is not required for child-only TANF
Child's income (if any):
- Social Security survivor benefit letter
- Child support payment records
- SSI benefit letter
- If the child has no income, simply state that — you do not need a letter proving zero income
What you do NOT need for a child-only application:
- Your tax returns
- Your bank statements
- Your pension or Social Security benefit letters
- Proof of your employment or lack of employment
If the caseworker asks for your financial documents, remind them that you are applying under the non-needy caretaker relative category where caregiver income is disregarded.
Additional Documents for SNAP
SNAP counts everyone in the household, so you will need your income documentation too:
- Pay stubs or employer letter (if working)
- Social Security benefit letter
- Pension or retirement account distribution statements
- Rent or mortgage receipts
- Utility bills (to claim the heating/cooling standard utility allowance)
- Childcare expense receipts (if applicable)
- Medical expense receipts over $35/month (if you are 60 or older or disabled)
Additional Documents for Turquoise Care Medicaid
For the child's Medicaid application, income documentation depends on tax filing status. If you do not claim the child as a tax dependent, the child's household is just the child (and any co-resident biological or adoptive siblings) — so you only need the child's income records. If you claim the child, tax-filer household rules may include your income unless an exception applies.

Tips to Avoid Delays
Keep photocopies of everything you submit. Write down the caseworker's name, the date, and a summary of what was discussed during the interview. If a document is not available (say the birth certificate is being ordered), ask whether you can submit it within the 30-day processing window rather than having the application closed.
If your application is denied or delayed past 30 days, contact the local ISD County Director or call the HCA Constituent Services Line to escalate. You can also request a Fair Hearing within 90 calendar days from the date printed on the denial notice.
