New Mexico SNAP Benefits for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
SNAP food assistance does not work the same way as cash assistance in New Mexico. With the NM Works child-only grant, your income as the grandparent is completely ignored. With SNAP, everyone who lives together and shares meals is one household — and everyone's income counts.
The Household Rule That Changes Everything
Federal SNAP regulations require that individuals who live together and customarily purchase and prepare meals together be treated as a single household. That means your Social Security, pension, wages, and the child's income all get added together, then tested against New Mexico's 200% Federal Poverty Level gross income ceiling.
For FY 2027 (October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027), the gross monthly income limit is $3,608 for a two-person household (you and one grandchild), $4,554 for three people, and $5,500 for four.
The child-only NMW cash grant the child receives is countable income for SNAP purposes. But the math still usually works in your favor — the cash grant increases total household income by $327 per month for one child, while the SNAP deductions often absorb more than that.
Deductions That Lower Your Countable Income
New Mexico applies several standard deductions before calculating your SNAP benefit:
- Standard deduction: $217 for households of one to three people
- Excess shelter deduction: housing costs above 50% of net income, capped at $769 for most households
- Heating/cooling utility allowance: HCA's standard amount may apply if you meet its heating or cooling expense rules. Since November 1, 2025, LIHEAP alone does not establish eligibility for this deduction for a household without an elderly or disabled member.
- Dependent care deduction: childcare costs for children under age 12 when the care enables work, training, or education
- Medical expense deduction: out-of-pocket medical costs above $35 per month for household members aged 60 or older or disabled
A retired grandparent with $1,600 in Social Security income, $800 in rent, and utility costs can have effective countable income well below the threshold after deductions.
Maximum Monthly SNAP Allotments
Once your net income is calculated, SNAP benefits fill the gap between what you can afford and the cost of a nutritionally adequate diet. FY 2027 maximums (October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027):
- 1 person: $306/month
- 2 people: $562/month
- 3 people: $808/month
- 4 people: $1,023/month
For FY 2027, the federal minimum monthly allotment is $25 for eligible households of one or two people. New Mexico's rules for elderly and disabled households can affect which income test applies.

The Expanded SNAP Work Rule
As of January 1, 2026, New Mexico's expanded 80-hour work or activity rule may apply to some SNAP recipients. It can apply to adults ages 18 to 64 who are able to work, are not caring for a child under 14, and do not qualify for another exemption. HCA lists caring for someone as a possible exemption, so ask ISD which exemption applies to your case.
You will, however, need to comply with documentation requirements during recertification. Keep copies of every document you submit and note the date and name of the caseworker who processed it.
School Meals and SUN Bucks
New Mexico mandates universal free breakfast and lunch for every public school student, regardless of household income. No application needed. School-age children who receive SNAP or NMW cash during the school year are automatically eligible for SUN Bucks — a $120 summer food benefit issued on a SUN Bucks EBT card to cover nutrition gaps when school is out.
How to Apply
Submit one combined application through YES New Mexico (yes.state.nm.us) that covers SNAP, NM Works cash, Turquoise Care Medicaid, and LIHEAP simultaneously. You can also call the ISD Consolidated Customer Service Center at 1-800-283-4465 or visit a county ISD office.
Expedited SNAP benefits must be issued within 7 days for households with zero income or very high shelter costs relative to income. If you are in a financial emergency when you apply, ask specifically about expedited processing.
