Utah SNAP for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

SNAP Does Not Work Like the Cash Grant

If you qualified for Utah's Specified Relative Grant and were told your income does not count, you might assume the same rule applies to food stamps. It does not. SNAP is a completely different program with its own household rules, and those rules pull your income into the calculation.

Under federal SNAP regulations, anyone who lives together and purchases and prepares food together is one household. A grandchild living with you cannot be listed as a "child-only" SNAP household. Your wages, pension, Social Security retirement, and any other income are combined with the child's income to determine eligibility.

Utah has not adopted Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE), which many other states use to relax the asset test and raise the income ceiling. Utah enforces the standard federal limits strictly.

Income and Asset Limits

For a two-person household (you and one grandchild), the 2026 gross income limit is $2,345 per month at 130% of the federal poverty level. Net income after deductions must fall below $1,800.

The asset test is $3,000 in countable resources. If you are age 60 or older or disabled, the limit rises to $4,750. Your primary home and one vehicle are generally excluded.

Maximum monthly SNAP allotments for 2026:

  • 2-person household: $562
  • 3-person household: $808
  • 4-person household: $1,023

Your actual allotment depends on net income after deductions — the lower your countable income, the closer you get to the maximum.

Deductions That Help

SNAP allows several deductions before calculating your net income:

  • A standard deduction that varies by household size; the 2026 standards listed here are $268 for a 5-person household and $308 for 6 or more. Check the current DWS table for other household sizes.
  • An excess shelter deduction for rent or mortgage costs above half your income after other deductions
  • A dependent care deduction for child care costs
  • If a household member is age 60 or older or disabled, ask DWS whether medical expenses qualify for a deduction and what limits apply.
  • Standard utility allowances: $514 per month for heating and cooling, $431 for basic utilities, $59 for telephone

The utility allowances can help grandparents on fixed incomes. The listed heating/cooling allowance is $514 per month; ask DWS which standard allowance applies to your household and what utility costs qualify.

Expedited Benefits

If your monthly gross income plus liquid assets total less than your monthly rent and utilities — or if you have less than $150 in gross monthly income and under $100 in liquid resources — you qualify for expedited SNAP processing. DWS must issue benefits within 7 calendar days of your application.

For a grandparent who just took in a child unexpectedly and is facing immediate food costs, expedited processing can bridge the gap while the full application is reviewed.

Work Requirements Do Not Apply to You

SNAP has Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD) work rules, but relative caregivers living with and caring for a minor child are categorically exempt. You will not be required to job search or meet work participation hours to keep your food stamps.

Filing Through myCase

Apply at jobs.utah.gov through the myCase portal — the same application (Form 61) handles SNAP, FEP, Medicaid, and child care. When listing household members for SNAP, include yourself and the child, since SNAP requires it. If you are already receiving the Specified Relative Grant, that cash counts as unearned income in the SNAP calculation.

Benefits load onto a Horizon EBT card on the 5th, 11th, or 15th of each month. Utah prohibits purchasing soft drinks with EBT.

The Utah Kinship Financial Help guide covers how SNAP interacts with every other benefit a kinship caregiver can receive — including the income-counting differences that catch most families off guard.
