Tennessee Grandparent Extracurricular and Sports Consent: What You Need to Sign

Your grandchild made the soccer team, the school hands you a stack of forms, and the first line says "Parent/Guardian Signature." You are neither. That moment of hesitation is common for Tennessee grandparents and relatives raising children without a court order — and the good news is that Tennessee law gives you a clear path to sign.

What a Power of Attorney Covers for Extracurriculars

Under T.C.A. § 34-6-304, a properly executed Power of Attorney for Care of a Minor Child delegates everyday caregiving authority to the designated caregiver. That authority extends beyond school enrollment and doctor visits. It covers signing field trip permission slips, sports participation forms, after-school program registrations, and youth league enrollments.

The statute delegates "care, custody, and control" of the child's daily activities. When a school or community organization asks for a parent signature on a liability waiver, sports physical consent, or summer camp registration, your POA gives you the legal standing to sign.

Tennessee schools accept a valid POA for enrollment, and the statute gives the caregiver authority to sign field trip permissions, liability waivers, and youth-sports forms. Present the POA alongside the activity form and ask the school whether it needs any additional paperwork.

Sports Physicals and Medical Releases

Most Tennessee school athletics require a pre-participation physical exam (the TSSAA form) and a medical release authorizing emergency treatment during games and practices. Because the POA under T.C.A. § 34-6-301 delegates authority for routine medical care, you can consent to sports physicals and sign the emergency treatment authorization that accompanies athletic participation.

Keep a certified copy of the POA in the child's sports file at the school. Coaches and athletic directors may not know the law as well as the registrar's office, so having the document on hand prevents delays when forms need signing at the start of a new season.

If the child needs a sports physical and you do not yet have a POA, emergency medical treatment is still available under T.C.A. § 63-6-222 — but a pre-participation physical is not an emergency. Get the POA signed before tryout season if you can.

After-School Programs, Daycare, and Community Leagues

Tennessee Department of Human Services-regulated daycare facilities accept caregiver signatures accompanied by the POA. For after-school care, state-funded enrichment programs, and community youth sports leagues, provide the POA with the program's forms and ask how it handles caregiver authorization.

If a league or program questions the POA, point to the third-party reliance protections in T.C.A. § 34-6-308 and § 34-6-310. An organization that relies in good faith on a valid POA receives statutory protection from civil liability.

When the POA Is Not Enough

A few activities fall outside a POA's reach. Federal passport applications for international travel require written consent from both biological parents or a certified court order granting sole legal custody or legal guardianship to the applicant — a state POA will not work. Similarly, some overnight travel programs or out-of-state competitions may require formal legal guardianship documentation. If the program's rules specifically reference "legal guardian or custodial parent," ask the organizer whether a Tennessee statutory POA satisfies their requirements. Many will say yes once they read it.

For everything from field day to band camp, the POA is the document you need. Keeping multiple certified copies — one at home, one at school, one in the child's activity binder — ensures you are never caught without it.
