South Dakota Benefit Renewal Deadlines for Kinship Caregivers

Four Programs, Four Different Renewal Clocks

Each South Dakota benefit program runs on its own recertification cycle. Missing a renewal can close your case, but the next step and effective date depend on the program. DSS reinstates a SNAP case if it receives a complete six-month report after auto-close and before the report month ends; Medicaid has separate retroactive-coverage rules.

Here are the current renewal periods and reporting rules for each program.

TANF (Child-Only Cash Grant)

Recertification: Every 12 months. DSS sends a renewal packet before the deadline.

Change reporting: Report any changes in the child's income, living situation, or school enrollment within 10 days of the change. If a child begins receiving child support or Social Security benefits, that affects the grant calculation and must be reported promptly.

Since child-only TANF depends solely on the child's income and your relative-caregiver status, most renewals are straightforward — confirm the child still lives with you, confirm the relationship, update any income changes.

SNAP (Food Stamps)

Recertification: Most SNAP households renew every 12 months. Some households also complete a six-month report form during the certification period. Households whose adults are all over age 60 or have a disability, with no countable earned income, are exempt from that report form.

Change reporting: If your notice requires mid-certification reporting, report when monthly gross income exceeds the limit for your household size by the 10th day of the following month. Categorically eligible households may have different reporting requirements; follow your notice.

SNAP renewals require updated income verification for everyone in the household. Have current pay stubs, Social Security statements, and shelter cost documentation ready before the recertification interview.

Medicaid / CHIP

Recertification: Annually for standard Medicaid. Starting January 1, 2027, adult Medicaid Expansion enrollees will move to six-month recertification cycles — a significant change that requires more frequent attention to mail from DSS.

Until December 31, 2026, qualifying applicants may receive retroactive Medicaid coverage for up to three months before applying. Starting January 1, 2027, the limit will be one month for Medicaid Expansion adults and two months for other coverage groups.

Children's Medicaid eligibility is typically renewed through an ex parte process — DSS checks available data sources and may renew automatically if income still qualifies. But if DSS cannot verify eligibility through data matching, they send a renewal form that must be returned.

The mail trap: Medicaid renewals arrive by postal mail. If your address changes and DSS does not have the new one, the renewal form goes to the old address, the deadline passes, and coverage terminates. Update your address with DSS immediately whenever you move.

Child Care Assistance (CCAP)

Recertification: Every 13 months (minimum certification period under current DSS policy).

Change reporting: Report a permanent change in employment or school status, a change in childcare provider, an address change, or household income above the maximum State Median Income within 10 days. A reduction in work hours below the minimum could affect eligibility.

Keeping Track of Everything

When you are receiving four separate benefits, each with its own renewal date and reporting rules, deadlines compound quickly. A SNAP recertification due in March, a TANF renewal in July, a Medicaid renewal in September, and a CCAP renewal in November means something is always coming up.

Set calendar reminders 30 days before each renewal date. When the packet arrives, complete and return it the same week — do not set it aside. Reporting deadlines vary by program, so follow the instructions on each program's notice and report form.

The South Dakota Financial Help Guide includes a renewal tracking calendar with pre-filled timelines for each program, so you can see every deadline in one place.
