Missouri Kinship Benefit Renewal and Recertification Dates: What to Track
Getting approved for benefits is only the first step. Every Missouri benefit program requires periodic renewal or recertification, and missing a deadline can cut off the child's cash assistance, food benefits, or health coverage — sometimes without warning. Here's what kinship caregivers need to track.
SNAP Recertification
FSD assigns a certification period and mails a recertification packet before it expires. Complete it, provide updated income documentation, and return it by the deadline shown in the notice.
Watch for the renewal packet in the mail and update your address with FSD promptly if you move; returned mail can disrupt notices and put benefits at risk.
Mandatory reporting between renewals: if your household income, address, or household composition changes, report it to FSD by the 10th of the month following the change.
Temporary Assistance (Child-Only TA)
Child-only TA cases are exempt from the 45-month lifetime limit that applies to adult recipients, so the grant can continue until the child turns 18 (or 19 if enrolled full-time in secondary school). However, FSD still conducts periodic eligibility reviews.
You'll need to verify that the child still lives with you and report any changes in the child's income (such as new child support payments or Social Security survivor benefits). The child's own countable income determines continued eligibility — your income as the caregiver is excluded from the calculation.
MO HealthNet (Medicaid)
Children enrolled in MO HealthNet receive 12 months of continuous eligibility, which protects against mid-year coverage loss from temporary income fluctuations. At the 12-month mark, FSD attempts an ex parte renewal — they automatically check state data sources (wage records, IRS matches) to verify continued eligibility.
If electronic verification confirms eligibility, the child's coverage is renewed automatically without any paperwork. If FSD can't verify electronically, they'll mail a paper renewal form. Complete and return it promptly. If FSD closes MO HealthNet after mail is returned as undeliverable, you have a 90-day reconsideration window to provide an updated address and verification documents without filing a new application.

Childcare Subsidy (DESE)
Childcare subsidies through the DESE Office of Childhood have their own reporting requirements. You must report changes in qualifying activities (employment, training), household composition, or income increases that push household income above 85% of the State Median Income within 10 calendar days. For income changes, the 10-day clock starts when you receive the first paycheck reflecting the change.
If household income rises above 85% of the State Median Income, the subsidy case closes. Regular re-verification periods apply, and DESE communicates through the Parent Portal.
How to Stay on Track
Keep a written log of every certification period end date across all programs. Mark the due date shown in each renewal notice and set a reminder to follow up if a notice does not arrive.
If FSD denies a renewal or reduces benefits, you have the right to request an Administrative Fair Hearing within 90 calendar days for SNAP, TA, and MO HealthNet — or 30 days for childcare subsidies. Filing within 10 calendar days of the adverse notice lets you request Aid-Paid-Pending, which keeps benefits flowing during the appeal.
Our Missouri Financial Help for Grandparents and Relatives Raising a Child guide includes a Renewal and Reporting Calendar worksheet designed specifically for kinship caregivers tracking multiple program deadlines.
