Missouri Guardianship Annual Reports: Does § 475.082 Apply to Minors?

Winning your guardianship hearing feels like the finish line, but check your order and circuit's requirements before assuming the reporting rules. RSMo § 475.082 requires an annual status report for an adult ward; it does not establish a statewide annual report requirement for every guardian of a minor.

What RSMo § 475.082 Actually Covers

Section 475.082 applies to adult wards. It calls for information such as the ward's and guardian's addresses, the guardian's contacts and visits, the ward's condition, whether guardianship remains necessary, and a plan for the coming year. Those are adult-ward reporting requirements, not a statewide form for a minor's guardian. If your order or circuit's local forms require a report for a minor, follow those instructions.

When a Report for an Adult Ward Is Due

For an adult ward, § 475.082 sets the report due date on the anniversary of the guardian's Letters. The statute does not set that anniversary deadline for reports about minor wards. For a minor, use the deadline in the court order or circuit's form; if there is none, ask the Probate Division whether a filing is required.

Do not assume that a minor's report is due on the anniversary of the Letters. Follow the date stated in the order or local form.

If Your Order Requires a Report

Section 475.082's review and enforcement provisions concern adult wards. If you missed a filing specifically required by a minor guardianship order, contact the Probate Division promptly and ask what the court requires to cure it. The statute does not support treating show-cause orders, contempt, or revocation as automatic consequences for every guardian of a minor.

Tips for Keeping Your Reports on Track

If your order requires a report, set a reminder based on the due date in that order or local form. Keep the school, health, and placement records that the required form asks you to provide.

If the child's circumstances have changed significantly, address the change in any report your court requires.

Beyond the Annual Report

Any status report required for a minor is separate from a conservator's financial accounting. If you were appointed as both guardian and conservator, check the order and applicable filing schedule for each role.

For a complete walkthrough of post-appointment duties — including any court-required reports, child support enforcement, and how to handle relocation — the Missouri Guardianship and Custody Court Process Guide covers each requirement step by step with tracking worksheets you can print and fill in.

If you have not yet filed for guardianship and want to understand the full process from petition through post-order compliance, the guide walks through every stage, including a Post-Order Compliance Calendar.
