Maine SNAP Benefits for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
SNAP Counts the Whole Household — But the Limits Are Higher Than You Think
Unlike TANF child-only grants, which exclude the caregiver's income entirely, SNAP (called the Food Supplement Program in Maine) counts everyone in the household who buys and prepares meals together. Your Social Security, pension, wages, and the grandchild's income all go into one pot.
That sounds like bad news. But Maine operates under Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE), which raises the gross income limit to 200% of the federal poverty level and eliminates the asset test. You will not be disqualified because you own a house or have a savings account.
Income Limits and Maximum Benefits (FY 2027)
| Household Size | Gross Monthly Income Limit (200% FPL) | Maximum Monthly Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | $2,609 | $306 |
| 2 people | $3,525 | $562 |
| 3 people | $4,442 | $808 |
| 4 people | $5,359 | $1,023 |
| Each additional | +$917 | +$225 |
Your actual benefit equals the maximum allotment minus 30% of your household's net monthly income. The lower your net income, the closer you get to the maximum.
Deductions That Shrink Your Net Income
This is where grandparent households often leave money on the table. Maine allows several deductions that can dramatically increase your SNAP benefit:
- Standard deduction: $217 per month for households of 1–3 people
- Earned income deduction: 20% of gross wages
- Dependent care deduction: Full out-of-pocket childcare or adult care costs that allow you to work or train
- Standard Utility Allowance (SUA): $718 per month for eligible households with heating or cooling costs separate from rent or mortgage — this is a flat rate, regardless of your actual bill, and it is one of the most generous in the country. A LIHEAP payment by itself qualifies a household for the Full SUA only if a payment over $20 was received in the current month or prior 12 months and at least one household member is elderly or disabled.
- Medical expense deduction: Out-of-pocket medical costs over $35 per month for household members 60 or older or disabled
A retired grandparent raising one grandchild, living on $1,800 per month in Social Security, paying heating costs, and spending $50 per month on prescriptions can often qualify for the full or near-full SNAP allotment after deductions.

Work Requirements and Exemptions
The federal ABAWD (Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents) work rules expanded in 2026 to cover adults through age 64. A person subject to those rules is exempt if their SNAP household includes someone under 14. You do not need to log 80 hours of work or training per month if you qualify for that exemption.
How to Apply
Apply through MyMaineConnection.gov, by phone at 1-855-797-4357, by paper to the OFI Farmington center, or in person at any OFI district office. You can apply for TANF, SNAP, and MaineCare on the same application.
Bring proof of identity, residency, income (pay stubs, Social Security award letter), and housing costs (rent receipt, mortgage statement, utility bills). If heating costs are relevant, verify that OFI applies the Standard Utility Allowance — it is worth more than most actual heating bills.
How TANF Affects SNAP
If you receive a TANF child-only grant for the grandchild, that cash counts as unearned income for SNAP purposes. The trade-off: roughly $30 in SNAP reduction for every $100 in TANF received. Since the TANF grant puts more in your pocket than the SNAP reduction takes away, accepting both programs is almost always the right move.
