Kansas SUN Bucks Summer EBT: $120 Per Child for Kinship Families

When school lets out for summer, so do the free breakfasts and lunches that kept grocery costs manageable during the school year. Kansas SUN Bucks — the state's Summer EBT program — puts $120 per eligible school-aged child onto a benefits card for groceries during the summer months.

For grandparents and relatives already stretching a fixed-income budget to feed a grandchild, that $120 per child adds up.

How SUN Bucks Works

SUN Bucks provides a one-time annual grocery benefit per eligible school-aged child during the summer. The benefit is loaded onto an EBT card and can be used at any retailer that accepts SNAP/Food Assistance — grocery stores, supermarkets, and farmers' markets.

The program is federal (part of the permanent Summer EBT program), administered in Kansas by DCF.

Who's Automatically Enrolled

Many kinship children qualify without you filing a separate application. Auto-enrollment applies to children who:

  • Receive free or reduced-price school meals
  • Are in households already receiving SNAP/Food Assistance
  • Receive TAF cash assistance
  • Are formally placed in foster care

If your grandchild is on any of these programs, you should receive a SUN Bucks card or have the benefit loaded to your existing EBT card automatically. Check your mail during June and July.

Manual Application

If your grandchild isn't on one of the auto-enrollment programs — maybe they're in a school that doesn't participate in the school meals program, or you haven't applied for SNAP or TAF yet — you can apply manually through the DCF Self-Service Portal. The manual application window typically runs through August 31.

Practical Tips for Kinship Families

A child who just moved into your home mid-school-year may not be enrolled in free school meals yet, which means they won't be auto-enrolled in SUN Bucks. Getting the child enrolled in free meals at school (or applying for SNAP, which directly certifies children for free meals) solves both problems at once.

If you're already receiving TAF child-only cash for the child, SUN Bucks auto-enrollment should happen automatically. One more reason the TAF application — where your income is excluded — is worth filing even if the monthly cash grant is small.

The Kansas Kinship Financial Help Guide covers SUN Bucks alongside SNAP, school meals, and the other nutritional programs available to kinship families in Kansas.
