How to Apply for ATAP in Alaska

Filing an ATAP application in Alaska is straightforward once you know which documents to bring and which application track to request. The process takes up to 30 days, but you can apply for SNAP and Denali KidCare on the same form to cover food and health needs while you wait.

Three Ways to Apply

Online: The Alaska Connect portal is the fastest route. Complete the Application for Services online and upload supporting documents.

By phone: Call DPA's Virtual Contact Center at 800-478-7778 to start an application over the phone.

In person or by mail: Use the paper Application for Services (Form GEN 50C) and bring it to your nearest DPA field office, or mail or fax it. Alaska has regional offices in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Wasilla, Bethel, Nome, Kenai, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Sitka, and Homer.

What to Bring

Gather these documents before you start:

  • Your photo ID and Social Security numbers for yourself and the child
  • The child's birth certificate establishing their age and parentage
  • Proof of your relationship to the child — birth certificates linking generations, a marriage certificate, or guardianship letters
  • Proof of Alaska residency — a lease, utility bill, or tribal verification letter
  • Income and asset documentation — 30 to 60 days of paystubs, pension letters, Social Security statements, and bank statements for the child (and for you, only if applying as a needy adult in the unit)

If you're missing records because the child arrived in an emergency, DPA must accept secondary evidence — hospital records, school enrollment documents, or sworn affidavits — while you work on getting official replacements.

Choosing Child-Only vs. Caretaker-Included

When you apply as a relative caregiver, you'll choose between two unit structures:

Child-only (non-needy caretaker relative): Only the child's income and assets count. Your retirement income, pension, and savings are excluded. No work requirements, no 60-month time limit. Maximum for one child: $452/month.

Caretaker-included: You join the assistance unit. Your income, assets, and employment status factor into eligibility. Higher maximum payment ($821 for one adult plus one child), but you'll face work participation requirements and the benefit months count toward the lifetime limit.

For most grandparents and relatives on fixed incomes, the child-only track is the better fit — your income stays out of the picture entirely.

What Happens After You Apply

DPA has 30 calendar days to process a standard application. Within the first 10 to 14 days, you'll receive a verification notice listing any additional documents they need. Respond promptly — missing the verification deadline can stall or close your case.

If the application is approved, benefits are deposited onto an Alaska Quest EBT card. If denied, DPA must send a written Notice of Adverse Action explaining the reason and your right to request a Fair Hearing.

While waiting for ATAP to process, you may qualify for General Relief Assistance for immediate shelter, fuel, or food costs — ask DPA when you file.

Our Alaska Kinship Financial Help guide includes a document-gathering checklist and a caseworker communication log to keep every submission tracked from day one.
