Florida SNAP Benefits for Grandparents Raising a Grandchild

SNAP Counts Your Income — TCA Does Not

This is the part that confuses nearly every kinship caregiver applying for benefits: Child-Only TCA ignores your personal income entirely, but SNAP does not. If you are raising a child under 18, SNAP rules include the child in your household; the child cannot form a separate household. Your pension, Social Security, wages, and any other income go into the calculation alongside the child's income.

The good news: Florida uses Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility, which sets the gross income limit at 200% of the Federal Poverty Level — considerably higher than the standard federal threshold. And if you are 60 or older, the gross income test disappears entirely. You are evaluated only on net income at 100% FPL.

Income Limits and Maximum Benefits (FY 2026–2027)

For a two-person household (you and one grandchild):

  • Gross monthly income limit: $3,608
  • Maximum monthly SNAP allotment: $562
  • Standard deduction: $217

For three people: gross limit $4,554, maximum allotment $808. Each additional household member adds roughly $948 to the gross limit and $225 to the maximum benefit.

Your actual benefit depends on net income after deductions. The most relevant deductions for kinship households:

  • Standard deduction: $217 (households of 1–3)
  • Excess shelter costs — rent or mortgage that exceeds half your net income after other deductions (subject to a federal cap, but no cap for elderly/disabled households)
  • Standard utility allowance: $445 for households paying heating or cooling costs
  • Medical expenses over $35/month for household members age 60 or older

What Does Not Count as SNAP Income

Child-Only TCA grants and Relative Caregiver Program payments received on behalf of the child are explicitly excluded from SNAP countable income. So are foster care board payments. This means the child's monthly cash benefit and your SNAP eligibility are evaluated on parallel tracks — the TCA payment does not reduce your food assistance.

The ABAWD Rule and Kinship Caregivers

The 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act expanded mandatory work requirements for Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) to adults aged 55 through 64. But grandparents and relatives living with a minor child under 18 are explicitly exempt. If you are raising a grandchild, the ABAWD work rules do not apply to you — regardless of your age.

WIC and Free School Meals

Two additional food programs require no separate income screening for many kinship families:

WIC covers children under age 5 with nutritional supplements, formula, and counseling. Children already receiving Medicaid or SNAP are adjunctively eligible — no financial screening needed. Apply through your local county health department.

Free school meals — children receiving TCA, SNAP, or in formal foster care are directly certified for free breakfast and lunch. The school district handles this automatically in most cases. If your grandchild was not direct-certified, submit a free/reduced meal application through the school's food service office.

How to Apply

SNAP, TCA, and Medicaid can all be submitted in a single application through the MyACCESS portal. When the portal asks about household income, report your own income accurately — unlike Child-Only TCA, SNAP needs the full household picture. DCF will calculate your deductions and benefit amount.

You can also apply in person at your local DCF Economic Self-Sufficiency office. Bring proof of income for everyone in the household, proof of residence, identification, and the child's Social Security card.
