Wyoming School Consent for Activities, Sports, and Field Trips as a Grandparent

Your grandchild is enrolled in school. Then the permission slips start coming home — field trips, sports teams, after-school activities, school photos. Each one asks for a parent or guardian signature. If you are the grandparent raising this child without a custody order, do you sign?

Permission Slips and Activity Forms

Most Wyoming school districts allow the person listed as the child's primary contact or emergency contact to sign routine permission forms. If you enrolled the child and the school has you on file as the caregiver, you can generally sign for:

  • Field trips
  • After-school activities and clubs
  • School photo days
  • Library card authorizations
  • Technology use agreements

These are administrative permissions, not legal consent in the medical or custodial sense. Schools exercise discretion about who can sign them, and a caregiver who is already recognized by the school as the child's household adult usually has no trouble.

The key is making sure the school's records reflect your role. When you enroll the child, ensure you are listed as the emergency contact and primary household adult — not just as a secondary contact.

Sports Physicals and Athletic Participation

For Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA) interscholastic sports, a student must have a current-school-year certificate of physical fitness from qualified medical personnel on file before practice. WHSAA requires the medical examination form to be signed by the examining provider and the student's parent or legal guardian.

This is where it crosses from school paperwork into medical consent territory. The WHSAA examination form is also a parental-permission form and calls for a parent or legal-guardian signature.

If you have a temporary guardianship order under W.S. §§ 3-2-301–303, the medical authority it grants covers sports physicals. If you are relying on a notarized parental letter, confirm with the provider before the appointment that they will accept it for a sports physical.

The school's athletic participation form itself — the one that acknowledges risk, waives certain liability, and confirms the student is cleared to play — also typically requires a parent or guardian signature. If you hold a guardianship order, you qualify. With a delegation letter, the athletic director's acceptance varies by district.

Medication at School

For a student's self-administration of medication for a potentially life-threatening condition, W.S. § 21-4-310 requires a written statement with parental verification and authorization plus a health-care provider's identification and verification of the medication. The statement must be signed by the parent or guardian and the student's physician or physician's representative. This statute addresses self-administration; ask the district what it requires for medication administered by school staff.

Emergency Medical Authorization at School

Schools ask every family to fill out an emergency medical authorization form — who to call, what hospital to use, whether the school can authorize emergency transport. As the child's primary caregiver and emergency contact, you should be on this form.

For a sudden emergency at school, W.S. § 21-3-135(b) does not prevent school personnel from rendering first aid or summoning emergency responders. The authorization form also records logistics, such as who to notify and where to transport the child.

Making It Simpler

If you find yourself navigating a different consent issue for every school activity, a temporary guardianship order gives you court-appointed authority over education, medical care, and dental care within the order's scope.

Our Wyoming School and Medical Consent Guide covers the full range of school and medical consent situations, from enrollment to activities to healthcare, with checklists for each step.
