TANF and SNAP Renewal Deadlines in Pennsylvania: What Kinship Caregivers Need to Know

Benefits Do Not Renew Themselves

Getting approved for child-only TANF or SNAP in Pennsylvania is only the first step. Both programs require periodic redetermination — the County Assistance Office reviews your household to confirm you still qualify. Miss the deadline, and benefits stop, sometimes with no warning beyond a letter that arrived while you were dealing with everything else.

For grandparents and relatives who fought through the application process once, losing benefits over a missed renewal is preventable.

TANF Redetermination: What to Expect

Child-only TANF grants go through an annual redetermination. The CAO sends a renewal form to your address on file before the review date. Follow the return deadline on the notice and include current documentation showing:

  • The child still lives with you — a school enrollment letter, pediatrician record, or utility bill showing your address
  • The child's income status — any changes in Social Security survivor benefits, child support received, or other income the child has in their own name
  • Your relationship to the child — this usually does not need re-proving after the initial approval, but the CAO may ask if circumstances have changed

Because child-only TANF excludes your income entirely, you do not need to provide pay stubs, pension statements, or tax returns for the redetermination. The CAO is only looking at the child's financial picture and confirming the living arrangement.

If you do not return the renewal form by the deadline, the CAO will close the case. Reopening requires a new application — essentially starting over.

SNAP Redetermination: Different Rules

SNAP renewals happen on a schedule set by your household type — typically every 6 or 12 months. Unlike TANF, SNAP counts your household income, so the renewal packet asks for more:

  • Current household income — your pay stubs, Social Security statements, pension letters, and any other income for everyone in the SNAP household
  • Housing costs — rent or mortgage, utilities, property taxes
  • Household composition — who lives in the home and whether anyone has moved in or out

The CAO mails a redetermination form with a specific return-by date. If you miss it, SNAP benefits stop at the end of the certification period. You may also need to complete a phone or in-person interview as part of the renewal.

Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (signed July 2025), states face stricter eligibility verification timelines for redeterminations. Follow the return deadline on the notice and contact the CAO promptly if you cannot provide a requested document.

The 10-Day Change Reporting Rule

Between renewal periods, Pennsylvania requires you to report changes within 10 calendar days. This includes:

  • A child moving out of or into your home
  • A change in anyone's income (new job, lost job, benefit increase)
  • A change of address
  • A new person joining the household

Failing to report changes can trigger overpayment claims — the CAO calculates what you should have received and demands the difference back. For SNAP, unreported household changes can also trigger fraud investigations.

How to Keep Track

The easiest way to avoid a missed renewal is to know your redetermination date. It is printed on your benefit notice — the letter the CAO sends after each approval or renewal. Mark it on a calendar, and set a reminder 45 days before.

Keep a folder (physical or digital) with copies of:

  • Every CAO letter you receive
  • Your COMPASS confirmation numbers
  • The child's school enrollment letters and doctor visit records
  • Your most recent income documents

When the renewal form arrives, you can pull what you need and return it the same week.

What the Guide Covers

The Pennsylvania Kinship Financial Help Guide includes a Benefit Tracking Calendar that maps every renewal deadline, the 10-day change reporting window, and the appeal clock — so you can see at a glance what is due and when. It also walks through exactly which documents the CAO needs for each program, broken down by whether you are renewing TANF, SNAP, Medical Assistance, or Child Care Works.
