Ohio Free Legal Aid for Kinship Caregivers: Where to Get Help
Free Help Exists — You Just Have to Know Where to Look
Raising a relative's child in Ohio means navigating benefit applications, school enrollment, medical consent forms, and sometimes court filings. Paying a family lawyer $200 to $400 an hour isn't realistic when you're on a fixed income and suddenly buying groceries for a child you didn't plan to raise.
Ohio has several free legal and navigation resources specifically for kinship caregivers. Here's where to find them.
OhioKAN — Your First Call
The Ohio Kinship and Adoption Navigator (1-844-644-6526) is the single best starting point. OhioKAN navigators help both formal and informal kinship families connect with benefits, local resources, and legal referrals. They also distribute direct flexible funds for immediate needs — bedding, clothing, utility bills.
OhioKAN isn't a law firm and won't represent you in court or complete your applications for you. But they know the system and can point you to the right agency, the right form, and the right legal aid office for your county. Their website is at ohiokan.jfs.ohio.gov.
Regional Legal Aid Societies
Ohio's legal aid organizations provide free civil legal assistance to low-income residents, including representation in benefit hearings, custody proceedings, and guardianship filings. The major organizations serving kinship families include:
- Legal Aid Society of Columbus — serves central Ohio counties
- Southeastern Ohio Legal Services — covers Appalachian counties
- Legal Aid Society of Cleveland — serves northeast Ohio
- Legal Aid of Western Ohio — covers northwestern counties
Income eligibility for legal aid is generally at or below 125%–200% FPL, though some organizations have higher thresholds for certain case types.
The catch: demand routinely exceeds capacity. Waitlists can be long, especially for custody and guardianship cases. Call early and be persistent. Some legal aid offices offer kinship-specific clinics or hotline days where you can get quick guidance without a full intake.

Ohio Legal Help
Ohio Legal Help (ohiolegalhelp.org) provides free interactive legal information, self-help court forms, and benefit navigation tools. It's not a law firm and won't represent you, but it walks you through common kinship legal tasks step by step — including the Caretaker Authorization Affidavit and Grandparent POA process.
If you need to understand your legal options before deciding whether to hire a lawyer or file on your own, this is the place to start.
Ohio Grandparent/Kinship Coalition
The OGKC operates a Caregiver Advocacy Hotline at (330) 737-7121. They focus specifically on grandparents and other relatives raising children — not general family law. They can help you understand your rights, connect with support groups, and navigate agency interactions.
Area Agencies on Aging
If you're 55 or older and raising a grandchild or relative's child, your local Area Agency on Aging can connect you with services under the National Family Caregiver Support Program (Older Americans Act Title III-E). This includes respite care subsidies, support groups, caregiver counseling, and material assistance.
AAA services are specifically for older caregivers and don't require that the child be in the welfare system. Find your local AAA through the Ohio Department of Aging or call 1-866-243-5678.
When Free Help Isn't Enough
Free resources cover a lot, but they have limits. If you're in a contested custody dispute with a biological parent, or if a state agency is making decisions about the child that you disagree with, you may need a private attorney. Many family lawyers offer a reduced-fee initial consultation, and some take kinship cases on sliding-scale fees.
The Ohio kinship financial help guide includes a full list of resources — legal aid contacts, navigator programs, and senior services — alongside every financial program available to Ohio kinship families.
