Louisiana WIC Benefits for Kinship Caregivers Raising Young Children

If you are a grandparent or relative raising a child under five in Louisiana, WIC can help cover formula, milk, cereal, fruits, vegetables, eggs, and other nutritional staples. The program is specifically designed for young children's dietary needs, and kinship caregivers qualify even without legal custody.

Who Qualifies

WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) serves children under age five. The child must live in Louisiana and be at nutritional risk — which a WIC clinic determines during a certification assessment that includes height and weight measurements and may include a hemoglobin test.

Income eligibility is set at 185% of the Federal Poverty Level for the household. But here is the shortcut most kinship caregivers can use: if the child or household already receives SNAP, FITAP, or Medicaid, income eligibility is automatic. Bring proof of that enrollment; otherwise, bring proof of household income accepted by the clinic.

No court order, guardianship, or custody document is required. A relative caregiver raising a child informally can bring the child in and apply.

What WIC Provides

WIC benefits are loaded onto an eWIC card that works at participating grocery stores. The monthly package depends on the child's age:

  • Infants (birth to first birthday): Formula, infant cereal, and jarred baby food (fruits, vegetables, meat)
  • Children (1–4 years): Milk, cheese, eggs, cereal, juice, peanut butter or dried beans, whole grains, and a cash-value benefit for fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables

For FY 2027 (October 2026 through September 2027), the cash-value fruit and vegetable benefit for children ages one through four is $27 per month. Eligible breastfeeding women may also receive a separate WIC food package with its own fruit-and-vegetable benefit.

How to Apply

  1. Find your local WIC clinic. Louisiana provides WIC through local clinics, including parish health units. Call the LDH WIC hotline at 1-800-251-2229 or use the clinic locator to find a participating location.
  2. Bring identification for yourself and the child — a birth certificate or hospital record for the child and a photo ID for you.
  3. Bring proof of address — a utility bill, lease, or official mail showing your Louisiana address.
  4. Bring proof of other benefits if the child or household receives SNAP, FITAP, or Medicaid. Otherwise, bring proof of household income accepted by the clinic.
  5. Attend the certification appointment. WIC staff will assess eligibility, discuss feeding patterns, and explain how to access benefits through eWIC.

Under Louisiana rules, infants are certified until their first birthday and children at intervals of about one year, ending with the month they turn five.

WIC Alongside Other Benefits

WIC stacks with every other kinship benefit. Receiving WIC does not reduce your SNAP allotment, KCSP payment, or FITAP grant. The programs operate independently — WIC covers specific nutritional items, while SNAP covers general groceries.

One benefit many caregivers miss: SUN Bucks. Eligible school-aged children, generally ages 5–18, enrolled in SNAP, FITAP, KCSP, or income-based Medicaid usually receive a one-time $120 benefit automatically. WIC alone does not trigger automatic enrollment. For Summer 2026, applications for children who were not automatically eligible were due August 20, 2026; check LDH for the next program year's application window.

The Bigger Picture

WIC covers nutrition for children under five, but there is a full range of Louisiana programs that help with cash assistance, health coverage, childcare, and more as the child grows. The Louisiana Financial Help for Kinship Caregivers guide walks through every program — KCSP, FITAP, SNAP, Medicaid, and CCAP — with the documents you need and how to apply for each one.
