Does Guardian's Allowance Affect Universal Credit or Pension Credit?
The Short Answer
Guardian's Allowance does not reduce your Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, or Council Tax Reduction. It is fully disregarded as income in all of these calculations. The full £22.95 per week sits on top of your existing benefits without affecting them.
This is the question that stops the most carers from claiming — the fear that getting one more benefit will eat into the ones they already depend on. With Guardian's Allowance, that fear is unfounded.
How the Disregard Works in Practice
When the DWP or your local council calculates your means-tested benefits, they add up your income and compare it against your needs. Certain types of income are excluded from this calculation entirely — they are "disregarded."
Guardian's Allowance has a full statutory disregard in:
- Universal Credit — the weekly amount does not count as unearned income and does not reduce your UC award
- Pension Credit — disregarded when calculating both Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit
- Housing Benefit — excluded from the income assessment
- Council Tax Reduction — excluded from the income assessment
If you are on any of these benefits and start receiving Guardian's Allowance, your existing awards stay exactly the same. The Guardian's Allowance payment is additional money.
The Benefit Cap Exemption
Guardian's Allowance payments do not count toward the statutory Benefit Cap. This matters if your household is already at or near the cap threshold.
Some benefits that push you over the cap trigger a reduction in your Housing Benefit or Universal Credit housing element. Guardian's Allowance cannot do this — it is entirely outside the cap calculation.

Carer's Allowance and Guardian's Allowance
You can receive both at the same time. If you are claiming Carer's Allowance for looking after someone with a disability (which could include the child you are raising), Guardian's Allowance does not interfere with it and Carer's Allowance does not interfere with Guardian's Allowance.
Disability Benefits for the Child
If the child you are caring for has a disability, you can claim Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children — or Child Disability Payment (CDP) in Scotland — alongside Guardian's Allowance without any deduction to either. These are separate benefits paid for different purposes.
The Local Authority Offset to Watch For
The one place where Guardian's Allowance can affect what you receive is in local authority kinship allowances. If you care for a child under a Special Guardianship Order or Child Arrangements Order in England or Wales, the local council may deduct Guardian's Allowance and Child Benefit from their discretionary allowance payment.
Scotland is different. Under Scottish Government guidance, local authorities paying Kinship Care Allowances must not deduct Guardian's Allowance from the carer's baseline allowance.
This is worth checking with your local council before you assume the total. The HMRC payment is guaranteed and fixed. The local authority top-up is discretionary and varies by council.
