How Long Does Guardian's Allowance Take? Processing Time and Payment Dates
How Long Does a Decision Take?
The Guardian's Allowance Unit reviews your BG1 form and supporting documents. A surviving-parent exception requires evidence for the relevant circumstances, such as the prison sentence, hospital detention order, or reasonable efforts to trace a missing parent. Contact the Unit for a status update if you are waiting for a decision.
Missing documents, an unsigned form, or lack of Child Benefit entitlement can prevent HMRC from confirming eligibility and may delay the decision.
When Payments Begin
Once your claim is approved, payments are backdated to the later of two dates: the date you first qualified, or three months before HMRC received your completed form.
Payments land in your bank, building society, or credit union account every four weeks, paid in arrears alongside your Child Benefit. The exact payment date depends on your Child Benefit payment cycle — Guardian's Allowance is added to the same schedule rather than arriving separately.
Can You Get Paid Weekly?
Yes, but only in certain circumstances. Weekly payments are available if you are:
- A single parent, or
- Receiving an income-based benefit such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit
If neither applies, payments arrive every four weeks. You can ask HMRC to switch to weekly payments by phoning the Guardian's Allowance Unit.

What You Cannot Use
Post Office Card Accounts are not accepted for Guardian's Allowance or Child Benefit payments. If your other benefits go to a Post Office account, you will need a bank, building society, or credit union account for these payments.
Tracking Your Claim
If you need a status update, phone the Guardian's Allowance Unit on 0300 322 9080. Have your National Insurance number and the child's details ready.
HMRC communicates decisions by post. The decision letter will confirm whether your claim has been approved, the weekly amount, and the date payments start. If the claim is refused, the letter explains why and tells you how to request a Mandatory Reconsideration.
Protecting Your Money During the Wait
Every week that passes between the child arriving and your BG1 reaching Newcastle is a week you cannot recover beyond the three-month backdating limit. If gathering documents is taking time, phone the helpline to ask how to submit any missing evidence. The three-month limit runs from HMRC receiving a completed BG1, so do not assume that sending an incomplete form protects the backdating date.
Our Guardian's Allowance guide includes a claim timeline showing when to expect each step — from submitting BG1 to receiving your first payment — and what to do if the process stalls.
