Georgia TANF Benefit Renewal and Recertification
Getting approved for child-only TANF in Georgia takes time and paperwork. Losing those benefits because you missed a renewal deadline wastes all that effort — and the cash stops immediately. Here's how recertification works and what you need to do to keep benefits flowing.
How Often Renewal Happens
TANF benefits in Georgia require periodic recertification. Check Georgia Gateway and any DFCS notice for your renewal steps and deadline; renewals are completed online or with paper Form 508.
For child-only grants where you're a non-needy caretaker relative, the core eligibility question hasn't changed: does the child still live with you, and does the child's own countable income remain below the threshold? Your personal income as the caregiver still doesn't count. But you still need to confirm these facts on paper.
The Renewal Process on Georgia Gateway
Most renewals happen through gateway.ga.gov. When your renewal period opens, Gateway flags your case and prompts you to update:
- Household composition — confirm who lives in the home, especially whether the child is still in your care
- Child income — report any changes to child support received, Social Security benefits paid to the child, or the child's own earnings
- Address and contact information — update if you've moved
- School enrollment — for children over 6, verification of school attendance may be requested
You'll submit the updates electronically and may need to upload supporting documents. DFCS may require an interview; check your renewal notice for instructions.
Documents to Have Ready
Even though the caregiver's income isn't counted in child-only cases, keep these on hand for renewal:
- Proof the child still lives with you — school records, medical appointment records, or a utility bill showing the child's name at your address
- Updated child income documentation — recent child support payment stubs, Social Security benefit letters for the child, or a statement showing no child income
- Any court order changes — if you've moved from informal care to a POA, guardianship, or custody order since the last certification, submit the new documents
If DFCS requests specific verification, follow the deadline in its notice. TANF renewals must be completed by the last business day of the certification month, including any required interview.

What Happens if You Miss the Deadline
A TANF case closes if you fail to submit Form 508 or complete a required interview by the last business day of the certification month. If you need to reapply, DFCS must process a TANF application within 45 calendar days.
If you receive a written notice stating your benefits will be reduced or terminated, you can submit a written fair hearing request within 30 calendar days from the date printed on the notice. To keep benefits unchanged while the appeal is pending, request the hearing before the action takes effect; the applicable window is 10 to 12 days from the notice date.
Keeping Track of Multiple Deadlines
If you receive TANF, SNAP, Medicaid, and CAPS for your grandchild, each program has its own renewal cycle. SNAP has its own periodic recertification schedule. Medicaid and PeachCare provide 12 months of continuous coverage with annual renewal. CAPS follows its own schedule through DECAL.
A printable benefits calendar can prevent surprises. Note each program's certification end date, set reminders 30 days before each one, and keep a folder with current documents ready to submit.
Our Georgia kinship financial help guide includes a benefit tracking calendar and renewal checklist designed specifically for relative caregivers managing multiple programs at once — so no deadline catches you off guard.
