FKCA NT: The Peak Body for NT Carers

The Foster and Kinship Carers Association NT (FKCA NT) is the Northern Territory's independent peak body for foster and kinship carers. Based in Darwin, it provides advocacy, peer support, training, and information to carers across the territory — from Palmerston to Alice Springs and remote communities in between.

FKCA NT operates independently from the Department of Children and Families (DCF). That independence matters when you need someone in your corner who isn't part of the same government system making decisions about the child's placement.

What FKCA NT Offers

Advocacy and advice: If you're having difficulties with your DCF caseworker, struggling to get a carer allowance tier reassessed, or facing problems with school enrolment or medical consent, FKCA NT can advocate on your behalf or help you understand your options.

Peer support networks: Connecting with other kinship carers who understand what it's like to raise a grandchild or relative's child. Peer support runs through phone contact, events, and community gatherings. Hearing from someone who's navigated the same Centrelink forms or the same school pushback can be more valuable than any official factsheet.

Training and professional development: FKCA NT runs carer training programs covering child behaviour, trauma-informed care, working with DCF, and navigating the payment system.

Information and referrals: If you don't know where to start — which payment to claim, which legal service to contact, or how to handle a specific paperwork problem — FKCA NT can point you in the right direction.

Formal vs Informal Carers

FKCA NT's core constituency is authorised foster and kinship carers under DCF placements. If you're an informal carer, contact the association to ask whether advice, referrals, or community support are available; not every program may be open to you.

Carer Gateway

Alongside FKCA NT, the national Carer Gateway (funded by the Commonwealth) provides support services to carers across the Northern Territory:

  • Emergency respite — short-term care for the child so you can rest or attend to your own health
  • Carer counselling — phone and face-to-face counselling for carer stress, grief, and burnout
  • Equipment and modification subsidies — for carers looking after children with disability or mobility needs
  • Carer mentoring — connection with experienced carers

Access Carer Gateway through their national website or phone line. Services are available regardless of whether you're a formal or informal carer.

How to Connect

Use the fkca.org.au website to check FKCA NT's current contact details and any referral requirements. If you're in a remote community and phone access is limited, ask at your local health clinic or council office whether FKCA NT has visiting support in your region.

For a directory of FKCA NT, Carer Gateway, legal aid services, and every other free support available to NT kinship carers, the NT Kinship Carer Support Guide includes a verified contact list organised by region and service type.
