Child Intervention Record Check Alberta: What Guardianship Applicants Need to Know
Background checks are one of the most confusing parts of an Alberta guardianship application. Are they required? Which ones? And how do you time them so they don't expire before your hearing date?
The answer depends on which legal route you're following — and the two routes have very different requirements.
CYFEA Route: Background Checks Are Mandatory
If the child is in the Director's custody or subject to a Temporary Guardianship Order, Permanent Guardianship Order, or Permanent Guardianship Agreement, you're on the CYFEA route. Every applicant and every adult household member (18+) must complete and clear:
Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) — Obtained through your local police service or RCMP detachment. This goes beyond a standard criminal record check to screen for pardoned sexual offences. Cost: $30 to $75. Processing: a few days to several weeks depending on location and volume.
Child Intervention Record Check (CIRC) — Processed through Alberta Children and Family Services. It checks records of intervention services provided to a child; information released relates to the guardian of that child. Confirm any applicable fee with Children and Family Services; processing times vary.
Both checks must be current. A PVSC is generally considered valid for 6 to 12 months from the date of issuance.
FLA Route: Checks Are Discretionary — But Smart
If you're applying under Section 23 of the Family Law Act (the child is not in government care), background checks aren't automatically required. The statute doesn't mandate them upon filing.
However, under Section 23(3), the judge has broad authority to order background checks, police record disclosures, or a home suitability assessment before granting the guardianship order.
Many self-represented applicants proactively attach a recent Police Vulnerable Sector Check to their Form FL-34 (Adult's Statement) to demonstrate suitability upfront. It shows the court you take the application seriously and can prevent delays if the judge would have ordered one anyway.
Getting Your Police Vulnerable Sector Check
Contact your local police service or RCMP detachment to request a PVSC. You'll typically need:
- Valid government-issued photo ID
- Proof of address
- The purpose of the check (guardianship application)
Some detachments accept walk-in requests; others require appointments or online submissions. Processing times range from same-day in smaller centres to 4-6 weeks in busy urban detachments. Plan ahead — a check that arrives after your hearing date is useless.

Getting a Child Intervention Record Check
The CIRC is processed directly through Alberta Children and Family Services. Contact the regional Children's Services office or visit the alberta.ca portal for the application process. You'll need to consent to the search and provide identifying information.
Processing times for the CIRC can be unpredictable, so submit your request as early as possible in the process — ideally while you're still working on your court forms.
Timing Your Checks
The practical challenge is synchronisation. Your PVSC has a limited validity window, your CIRC takes unpredictable processing time, and your court date may shift. If a check expires before your hearing, you'll need a fresh one.
Start both checks as soon as you decide to file. If your hearing gets delayed, check whether your results are still within the acceptable window and request updated checks if needed.
The Alberta Private Guardianship Court Process Guide includes a background check tracking log to manage submission dates, reference numbers, and expiry windows alongside your overall filing timeline.
